Plants terrestrial, large or medium sized. Rhizome long-creeping, with siphonostele (Histiopteris), short and erect or ascending, with dictyostele (Pteris), densely scaly, scales acerose and thick, basifixed. Fronds monomorphic, rarely dimorphic or subdimorphic, spaced (Histiopteris) or clustered (Pteris), stipitate; stipe often straw-colored, seldom castaneous-reddish or brown, glabrous, rarely hispid or scaly; lamina oblong or ovate-triangular, rarely pentagonal, 1-pinnate or 2- or 3-pinnate-pinnatifid, or rarely palmate, occasionally simple or 3-forked, herbaceous, papery or leathery, glabrous, rarely pubescent; venation free or rarely areolate, veinlets not included in areoles; in Pteris with veinlike heterocells below epidermis. Sori submarginal, linear [??round or oblong], on a vascular commissure joining apices of veins, with linear, membranous indusia consisting of reflexed edge of lamina, continuous, interrupted just at sinuses and absent at segment apex; spores trilete, or rarely monolete (Histiopteris), hyaline, surfaces often scabrous or verrucose.
This family has ca. 10 genera [??number of species worldwide], distributed in tropics or subtropics, especially in tropical America; two genera and 72 species in China (33 endemic).

Plants terrestrial. Rhizome erect or ascending (rarely short or prostrate), vascular system a complex solenostele or a dictystele, scaly; scales brown, narrowly lanceolate or linear, membranous, firm. Fronds clustered; stipe deeply grooved adaxially, with one vascular bundle V-shaped in cross section; fronds usually 1- or 2-pinnate or sometimes 3-pinnate, or sometimes 3-forked, basal pinnae often with a branch (and sometimes more than one) near base of basiscopic side, branch similar to main part of pinna but smaller; apical pinnae similar to lateral pinnae; costae or midvein deeply grooved adaxially, often with awns on base of each costa; venation free or areolate, veins simple or 2-forked, if areolate, with regular rows of areoles parallel to costa (sometimes also along midveins of segments), a few species with veinlike heterocells below epidermis (Pteris multifida, P. cadieri, P. grevilleana, etc.); lamina herbaceous or papery when dried, sometimes subleathery, glabrous or rarely pubescent. Sori linear, along margin, sterile except at apex and notch, with paraphyses; annulus consisting of 1634 incrassate cells; spores trilete (a few species with monolete spores), cinereous or black, surfaces scabrous or verrucose. x = 29.
Pteris is a large genus with about 250 species distributed in tropical and subtropical areas, southward to New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, north to Japan and North America; 71 species in China, mainly distributed in the South and Southwest, a few species in the East and south of the Qinling Mountains (33 endemic).

Fronds sparse, large, indeterminate; stipe castaneous-reddish, shiny, long, terete, glabrous; costae same as stipes in color, slightly grooved adaxially; lamina triangular, 2- or 3-pinnate; pinnae opposite, often sessile; pinnules at base a pair, auricle-like; pinnules opposite; venation reticulate, without included veinlets; lamina papery to subleathery, glabrous, basally usually pallid. Sori along margin of lamina, with collecting vein near margin, protected by a narrow linear false indusium formed by a membranous margin, paraphyses present, without velum; indusia with long stalks and annulus composed of 18 thick wall cells; spores dihedral, oblong to reniform, hyaline, with prominent wart. x = 12.
About seven species: widely distributed in pantropical regions, southward to the Cape of Good Hope of Africa, Australia (Tasmania), and islands near Antarctica; sometimes those species had been united into one species; one species in China.
